On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand
Posted by TulipGirl | Under Christianity and the Church, Theology for Girls Sunday Jul 6, 2008My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly trust in Jesus’ Name.On Christ the solid Rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand;
All other ground is sinking sand.When darkness seems to hide His face,
I rest on His unchanging grace.
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.On Christ the solid Rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand;
All other ground is sinking sand.His oath, His covenant, His blood,
Support me in the whelming flood.
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my Hope and Stay.On Christ the solid Rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand;
All other ground is sinking sand.When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh may I then in Him be found.
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.On Christ the solid Rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand;
All other ground is sinking sand.
My oldest is singing this right now, boldly and fervently. My heart is singing along with him. I cut-n-pasted the lyrics from cyberhymnal.org, which provides the backstory of this hymn. “One morning it came into my mind as I went to labour, to write an hymn on the ‘Gracious Experience of a Christian.’ . . . On the Sabbath following I met brother King as I came out of Lisle Street Meeting…who informed me that his wife was very ill, . . . As these verses so met the dying woman’s case, my attention to them was the more arrested. . .”
If you go to pandora.com and create a station with the title of this hymn, you’ll have peaceful piano music for your Sunday afternoon.
I love this hymn. The Sunday before Scott was admitted into the hospital for the heart cath procedure, the sermon at church was on the parable about building your house on sand or on rock. In the parable, Jesus said WHEN the storms of life come the house built on rock will stand…. Rev Brown pointed out that Jesus didn’t promise that building on the solid rock would prevent storms and guarantee fair weather. No–there’ll be storms. So, he said, Christians should be preparing. He suggested preparing by making regular prayer and regular worship part of our lives. So simple and so true, of course, but we need to be reminded from time to time.
I went home thinking about that, and two days later we got the news that Scott’s heart was not functioning as expected and were immediately sent down to the hospital. STORM. We were thankful the test revealed no problem at all–all that drama was based on a false positive, but I was also thankful to go into that storm knowing Christ would be our solid rock.
I love to hear about your children singing these great hymns. If I had it to do over again, that’s one thing I’d do–make sure my kids knew lots of hymns, just like they know lots of Christmas carols.
love pandora. thanks tg
Thanks for this powerful hymn. I love to sing it! I wonder if there are any “modern” renditions of the hymn out there since it’s message is one of such power.
When we are weary we can truly cast our cares upon Him and when we cannot support ourselves He is there for us. Thanks for this awesome hymn. I’ll be singing it today!
Love that hymn. I haven’t listened to Pandora in a while. I’ll head over there now…
Kathy, I took piano for many years. Many, many years. I can hardly play a thing. Simply melody and super simple harmony. One of the piano books I used for practice was easy hymns. Along with the Bible verses memorized as a child, I’ve been amazed at how the Holy Spirit brings to mind bits of hymns when my soul most needs them.
MW. . . Hmmm. . . I wonder. . . If I find out, I’ll let you know. (And let me know if you discover a reworked version of this hymn, pls!)
Missy and Gina, yeah, Pandora is fun. *grin* I really like it for Christmas music, too.
I am sorry to post this but can not figure out how to unsubscribe to your postings. I appreciate everyone’s opinion but want to unsubscribe to this comment and to previous one. Please advise.
When someone comments on a post, there is a box to check or uncheck before commenting that will subscribe you (or not) to the comments of that post. In the future when you comment, please be sure to see whether the box is checked or not so that you are not subscribed to comments on future threads.
Unfortunately, at this point I’m not aware of anything that I can do to unsubscribe someone once they have subscribed to a thread. While I understand that can be frustrating, I can only direct you how to prevent it in the future.
you’ve been find all the “oldies but goodies” as we call them in our house. I know I’ve really enjoyed songs from Watermark on the really tough days. (like Mended, and Captivated, and Arise, and Be Comforted).
I’ve received several requests to unsubscribe people from receiving emails of comments on posts to which they responded. I want to make sure all understand that I have not signed anyone up for these subscriptions, when you post a comment you have the opportunity to opt in or opt out.
It has taken a few days to figure out some of the behind-the-scenes wordpress coding, but I can now unsubscribe those who have asked that I do so. I appreciate those who have been patient.
And I do encourage you to continue the conversation!
Grace and peace,
TG
I just realized this is where I got that song in my head all this week. LOL It never crossed my mind that my post needed a hat tip. LOL
LOVE this hymn, too!! What else can we rely on if it’s not the unchanging truths of Christ? ALL other ground is sinking sand.
Are you familiar with Red Mountain Music? It’s out of a PCA church in Birmingham, AL, that sings OLD hymns with more modern, almost-acoustic-sounding tunes. Awesome stuff! You might find that song in their collections.
I know that Avalon did a recent recording of this hymn. But I think Passion does a great job of making “modern” renditions of hymns. I would recommend looking up those songs. Everything from “Jesus Paid it All” to “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing”.
what is the verse this is based off of?
Thanks so much for putting this on the website, I felt like myself and my grown sons were sinking, and I remembered this song from my youth, I was so thrilled to find it on the internet and I think my sons my prefer the newer versions, so I’ll check those out too!
Glad it lifted your heart. . . A hymn on my lips always soothes my soul.
