Advent, The First Sunday
Posted by TulipGirl | Under Advent / Christmas Sunday Nov 30, 2008Tonight we assembled our Advent wreath. Along with tapers purple and pink and a pillar of white, the boys have arranged magnolia leaves, spanish moss, acorns and bits of grass. We turned off all the lights in the house, and were goofy for a few minutes in the dark. Then I lit a candle that I was holding, gave it to one of the boys, lit another, until we were each holding candles. We took our candles outside and saw how much even our little candles brought light to the dark neighborhood.
We returned to the table, and my oldest lit the first candle, the prophecy candle.
2 The people walking in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
a light has dawned.
3 You have enlarged the nation
and increased their joy;
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as men rejoice
when dividing the plunder.
4 For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,
you have shattered
the yoke that burdens them,
the bar across their shoulders,
the rod of their oppressor.
5 Every warrior’s boot used in battle
and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,
will be fuel for the fire.
6 For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
We talked about why we observe Advent. We talked about light, darkness. We talked about prophecy and the incarnation. When I told the boys to look up hymn #194, my oldest got excited, “I love that one!” We’ll be singing it together each day this week.
O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here,
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, O come, thou Lord of might,
Who to thy tribes, on Sinai’s height,
In ancient times didst give the law
In cloud and majesty and awe.
O come, thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan’s tyranny;
From depths of hell thy people save,
And give them victory o’er the grave.
O come, thou Dayspring from on high
And cheer us by thy drawing nigh;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadows put to flight.
O come, thou Key of David, come
And open wide our heav’nly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
We sang the same hymn in church with the children leading us in with the first stanza. All my kids sang this song throughout the day…softly, loud…in their minds all day long…
Don’t you just love that?
O come o come Emmanuel is my absolute favoritest Christmas Carol! Thank you for sharing your view and traditions of Advent. You are always so gracious in your suggestions and thoughts. Your posts have directed my thoughts toward our Savior and taken away the “bah, humbug” thoughts I was nursing in the back of my mind. What a joyous season to celebrate our Lord and King!
The traditions get richer and richer each year as our children have memories of previous years.
Thanks for sharing what your family does for Advent.
I love that one, too. It’s probably my favorite Christmas hymn. I can’t sing it without getting all teary and goose-bumpy.
Oh I miss celebrating advent! I so enjoyed this post!
