Of tender heart, Forgiving others, Take your part

Sunday Feb 22, 2009

All creatures of our God and King
Lift up your voice and with us sing,
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Thou burning sun with golden beam,
Thou silver moon with softer gleam!

O praise Him! O praise Him!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Thou rushing wind that art so strong
Ye clouds that sail in Heaven along,
O praise Him! Alleluia!
Thou rising moon, in praise rejoice,
Ye lights of evening, find a voice!

O praise Him! O praise Him!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Thou flowing water, pure and clear,
Make music for thy Lord to hear,
O praise Him! Alleluia!
Thou fire so masterful and bright,
That givest man both warmth and light.

O praise Him! O praise Him!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Dear mother earth, who day by day
Unfoldest blessings on our way,
O praise Him! Alleluia!
The flowers and fruits that in thee grow,
Let them His glory also show.

O praise Him! O praise Him!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

And all ye men of tender heart,
Forgiving others, take your part,
O sing ye! Alleluia!
Ye who long pain and sorrow bear,
Praise God and on Him cast your care!

O praise Him! O praise Him!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

And thou most kind and gentle Death,
Waiting to hush our latest breath,
O praise Him! Alleluia!
Thou leadest home the child of God,
And Christ our Lord the way hath trod.

O praise Him! O praise Him!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Let all things their Creator bless,
And worship Him in humbleness,
O praise Him! Alleluia!
Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son,
And praise the Spirit, Three in One!

O praise Him! O praise Him!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

I’ve been humming this off and on all morning. Today was a nursery service day for me and one of my boys — being in the nursery is a real joy. We usually have cute toddler twin girls, a crawling/walking 10 m/o and an older preschool boy. One of the twins loves being outside (one of the teens at church told me) and so when transitions are difficult, we go outside and walk around. She calms down in seconds when out-of-doors. So we were outside this morning for a few minutes, enjoying the sunshine and heard the music from the opening hymn. All creatures of our God and King. . . One of the many blessings of babies and toddlers is that they enjoy singing, even though my voice is off. . . even though I can’t carry a tune or I forget the words. So together, little toddler and I and all the creatures of our God and King were lifting our voices to sing. . . We saw the birds and the flowers and it was lovely to just lift our hearts in worship.

During the Christian Ed., we continued our discussion of Tim Keller’s book The Reason for God: Belief in an Age of Skepticism. This week we’re in chapter 12, The (True) Story of the Cross. What really stood out to me from that discussion is just how costly forgiveness is — even though I know God’s great love, it is amazing to me just how sorrowful, painful, and difficult forgiveness is. I know it in some small way, personally — but God’s amazing forgiveness. . . what love, what sacrifice. And so now I have this stanza repeating in my heart today. ..

And all ye men of tender heart,
Forgiving others, take your part,
O sing ye! Alleluia!
Ye who long pain and sorrow bear,
Praise God and on Him cast your care!

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Sounds like your Keller discussion is good. I haven’t read that one yet, but it is on the list for this year. BTW, have you read “Culture Making” by Andy Crouch? I am abut 3/4 through and have really been enjoying it. It is the 1st non-fiction book of substance that I will start and finish this year!

BTW, any chance I might see a birthday present before I turn 31  ?

Ha! I dunno. . . *L* I’m really bad about mailing things. Should have given it to Andrew when he was here. Hmmmm. . . Thanks for the poke, though.

I’ve been humming it all week, Melinda. *grin* Though, my friend Kristen posted a Lenten hymn. . . One we don’t know. I’d like to learn it, though.
