This Reminds Me Of Our Neighborhood

I came across the English Russia blog the other day, and this picture reminded me SO much of our neighborhood in Kyiv (except for the main point of the pic — the cars parked so close.) But the style and size of the buildings, the neighborhood, the colors. . . Definitely brings back memories.
Thanks to Google Maps, you can actually take a pretty close look at where we used to live. I miss it. But honestly, I’m not missing the looooong winter. Florida winters suit me just fine.
Many gray skies this winter, tulipgirl, but no snow here in Kherson. Did you read that correctly? Yes – NO SNOW. We have had a couple skiffs and that’s it. A long dry spell and then pouring rain for several days, but no snow. The good news is that we’ve also had more blue skies than ever before in the past 10 years. I love sunshine and miss it dreadfully in winter, but I also miss the snow. This is a strange winter, for sure.
Interestingly, it also looks just like the (former) East Berlin. We had, through the military, permission to go into East Berlin, having gotten orders cut, and gone through all the checkpoints. While West Berlin looked very much like any stunning western European city, the east looked as if it hadn’t left the 1950′s mass shelter housing. Even the coal, burning in the air, was just a complete difference from the other side of the Wall. It made me sad to experience it, but I feel honored, too.
Aw gee… nostalgia. :) I’m definitely with you on the Florida winter. Ain’t it gorgeous these days?!?!
Let’s talk one of these Mondays! Miss you!
I guess one ex-soviet country is just like another! ‘Cause that looks JUST LIKE my neighboorhood in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia!
