Seeds Thrown to the Wind

Monday Aug 3, 2009

“Children do not accidentally become righteous leaders or emotionally healthy and productive adults -– any more than seeds thrown randomly to the wind grow to be part of a thriving garden. Simply throwing children into a cultural tornado and hoping for the best gives them little chance of living up to their potential or coming out unharmed.

Someone needs to take responsibility for their nurture, protection, nourishment, intellectual development, manners, recreation, personal needs, and spiritual development. Someone needs to commit time and energy into staying close to them as they grow, encouraging and correcting and teaching.”

Sally Clarkson via MbG

Years ago, a friend lent me some cassette tapes (remember those?) with Sally Clarkson sharing encouragement about homeschooling. I remember it was just the right bit of mommy-inspiration for that time. Clay and Sally Clarkson continue to communicate the Gospel, nurturing parents and children.

Happy birthday, Sally!

I love this quote. My husband and I are firm believers in bringing our children up knowing from where they come culturally and what their family believes (spiritually and religiously), not just thrown in the mix to find bits and pieces here and there. Ultimately, they will find their way on their own, but a strong since of place and ancestry as well as a belief in a God larger than they are will give them the security they need to explore. Sure we still search for who we are beginning in adolescence, but with this foundation we don’t have as far to look and we understand ourselves better while we are looking.
The husband and I are cultural preservationists and Christians. This quote speaks greatly to me. Thanks for posting it.

I love Sally! I was blessed to hear her speak locally a few months ago. What an encouragement. I was just at her blog, itakejoy, before I came over here. I love you, too, TulipGirl! You build me up in my faith and my goals whenever I visit you.
