And another reason to vote

Reviewing our tax numbers from the past few years, it's very clear that Bush's "tax cuts for the rich" greatly benefit not-so-rich missionary families, too.

Just another reason to Vote for W in 2004!

I always comment that I must be pretty darn rich whenever someone starts complaining that Bush's tax cuts are only for the rich.

Amen to W and his tax cuts for the "wealthy."

I asked my liberal friends and they pocketed the full child tax credit (up from $600 to $1000) and they didn't calculate their taxes using the old rates...rather opting for the lower new "Bush" rates. I guess it is just fun to grinch a bit about the "recklessness" of Bush's tax package while looking for ways to spend your extra money. :-)

Oh man, don't tell the liberals that a missionary benefited from Bush's tax plan. I can see Kerry’s ad now: “Bush’s reckless tax package favors the wealthy and ‘religious.’”

The point is that middle class folks are whoopin' an hollerin' about having an extra $1000 to spend, while the wealthy, who didn't need it, got millions.

But you know, if our gov't had the money to spend, terrific, yes, let's give some of it back to the people who earned it in the first place. The problem is we don't have it - we are in deficit spending mode. It would make as much sense as me taking out a loan at 18% interest to pay my kids their allowance. It does more harm than good, long-term.

And maybe you should consider yourselves rich. Last year, our family didn't even get what we thought the minimum was - and we had 3 kids at the time. We were told we didn't make enough to qualify for the credits. And here I thought we were the ones this credit was supposed to help, John Q. Citizen, working for a living.

Autmom,

"And maybe you should consider yourselves rich."

You are right. A lot of it is a matter of perception and attitude. Our Ukrainian neighbors do think we are rich because we can afford to feed four children. It's been challenging to be percieved as a "rich American" and know how to help our neighbors in a way that matches our means and is appropriate in the culture.

I feel rich when I consider our blessings, children, flat, and life. But very few of our friends would look at the numbers and think we're rich! *grin*

"The point is that middle class folks are whoopin' an hollerin' about having an extra $1000 to spend, while the wealthy, who didn't need it, got millions."

I would argue that the tax cuts have had a greater impact among the lower income brackets. For example, the married-filing-jointly deduction increased to a degree that it really does impact the amount of taxes paid/refund returned for those who are not wealthy (who are very likely to take a standard deduction rather than itemize.)

"But you know, if our gov't had the money to spend, terrific, yes, let's give some of it back to the people who earned it in the first place. The problem is we don't have it - we are in deficit spending mode. It would make as much sense as me taking out a loan at 18% interest to pay my kids their allowance. It does more harm than good, long-term."

I agree--I don't like the more-than-necessary spending that has gone on lately. Honestly, I'm disappointed with George W. and the Republicans in that regard.

"Last year, our family didn't even get what we thought the minimum was - and we had 3 kids at the time. We were told we didn't make enough to qualify for the credits. And here I thought we were the ones this credit was supposed to help, John Q. Citizen, working for a living."

I don't understand this--and don't really want to pry into anyone's financial situation.
The Child Tax Credit (up to $1000 per child) is across the board for those making less than $110,000 married-filing-jointly and impacts the taxes of the less-wealthy in a disproportionately higher way than the wealthy. For many, that child tax credit is the difference between paying extra taxes and getting a refund. However, for many, this was offset by the "advance" tax credit that was in the form of a check mailed out last summer.

In addition, for the less-wealthy, the additional child tax credt can wipe out the rest of the taxes owed or result in a refund as well.

Then of course, the EIC benefits those who are employed and make less than $34K a year, on a graduated bell scale.

And yes, all income levels benefited from the tax rate decreases--and hooray. I'd rather have the government have a smaller budget to work with to help it stay within reasonable bounds, than for the government spenders to think they have extra of your and my money to play with.
