The Swing
How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!Up in the air and over the wall,
Till I can see so wide,
River and trees and cattle and all
Over the countryside--Till I look down on the garden green,
Down on the roof so brown--
Up in the air I go flying again,
Up in the air and down!

That one and "The Friendly Cow All Red and White" are favorites of mine. Also, "In Winter I Get Up At Night And Dress By Yellow Candle Light" which my dad, born 1901, would recite. It was quite literally true for him!

You should see my Child's Garden of Verses book, given to me on a birthday by a cousin-friend. The covers are separated from the pages, which are well worn. It's well loved and still a treasure.
The Swing was the first piece of poetry I ever had to memorize (in second grade) and one of the few I still can recite all the way through. I say it to the kids almost every time we go to the park.

This poem was just brought to my attention earlier this week when we popped in the inaugural episode of Rocky & Bullwinkle! How funny that you would post it now. I'm sure it would be a different experience reading it without images of Bullwinkle soaring into the air, falling through trees, etc! The rhymes are nice :)

Oh, I really like that poem! Just the other day DH and I were discussing how much our children love to swing, and wondering why it is such a beloved childhood pasttime. Even as an adult, if I can find one that can hold me, I love to swing!

*GRRR* I thought i had the first sentence right - but even that was way off! Blast - i'm no good at this. We did have a happy day at the park though, so I guess that's what counts... :)

inAZ, I say the first line differently, too. I think it's the way we remember from childhood. Glad today was a good park day. Playgroup?

Brings back childhood memories.

yes - playgroup today. Our dirty-hippy bunch back on home turf. was FUN... Last week some very clean cut- uber-organized moms with their kids kinda took over our park. (Would have been a rumble if the majority of our group hadn't decided to go swimming.*wink) I did not go swimming - saw moms and kids at the park and stopped by. YIKES - the vibes were bad. (As if they were wondering what I was doing there...) And I was trying so hard to introduce myself and such. SHEESH! LAlala... sorry to ramble - I'm tired!
