Grade the Flags

This guy decided to grade the flag of each country, based on his very subjective, personal criteria.

Ukraine got a B-. His comment? "Bad colors."

I don't understand that--the clear blue of the sky over a golden yellow field of sunflowers. I mean, it's not like it's purple and orange.

A couple of his grades seemed like they could have been politically motivated. But Carol and Andrea will be pleased with how their country's flag fared.

I am still reeling from his "worst flag of any independent nation-state" comment on the Brazilian banner!

BTW, thanks for signing the guestmap! This is a great blog, and I am adding it to my daily reads.

Thanks, Andrew!

Yeah, that was a pretty snarky comment. And IMHO Brazil rates a lot higher than some of the ones this guy likes. . . No accounting for some people's taste, huh?

I also disagreed with his practice of automatically downgrading a flag for depictions of weapons. While I would agree with him about the two or three that picture a machete and an automatic rifle (somehow it just screams "proudly hacking our ethnic and religious minorities to bits"), flags that depict the traditional weapons of a culture (like some of the african flags, or the sabre on the Saudi Arabian flag) don't seem inappropriate to me.

I would rather like to see his take on the flags of the various United States. Personally, I'm fond of the South Carolina flag.
