JWs at the Door

A few minutes ago, the doorbell rang and there stood two well-dressed ladies offering me Jehovah's Witnesses literature.

I only understood about half of what they were saying, but after confirming they were JWs I told them I wasn't interested.

"You're not interested?"
"The Jesus you believe in isn't the Jesus that is taught in the Bible," I explained.
"You don't think we believe in Jesus?"
"No, I think you do believe in Jesus."
They smiled.
"But you believe in a Jesus that is different than the Jesus of the Bible. I pray that you will read your Bible more and understand who the Jesus of the Bible is. My kids need me--I need to go."
They looked at me quizzically and tuned to go. I hope I actually said in Russian what I was trying to say.

If Hubby had been home, perhaps we could have invited them in for tea and talked more about JW beliefs and the Bible.

Sadly in Ukraine, cults like JW and LDS are growing rapidly. The average Ivan on the street frequently thinks that any religious group that is not Ukrainian or Russian Orthodox is a cult. That can make things difficult for historical, small-o orthodox churches like ours.

We just had LDS come to our door yesterday. I didn't realize the JW and LDs were growing so fast over there.

For years my husband was unfailingly kind to two elderly (male)Jehovah's Witnesses who came to our door regularly. Usually their topics were agreeable, but when they started mean-mouthing the Trinity, that was the last straw. He said they were unwelcome to express such thoughts in our home. They have never returned!

I spoke to two JW's for over 5 years! They told me no one had talked to them so long without getting angry. I told them I had to witness to them as well. I don't think the average "Ivan" in any country generally knows their scripture well enough to know how to combat a well trained JW or LDS. With LDS especially I believe there is a really pull to their way of life. We must be prepared!

Hubby and I have had encounters with JW and LDS missionaries as well. It is always disheartening to come across individuals so fervently following a false gospel. One of the bad things about the fall of the iron curtain is that it let in the bad and the ugly along with the good. I pray that people will be able to tell what's what.

Well, there's a new favorite bookmark! I actually got here two hours ago... but I clicked on that link, and just came up for air! Just wanted to say thank you for the head's up on CARM... I'm going to go finish my coffee while I read. :-)
