Sympathetic Priest and One Foundation

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.

Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

--Hebrews 4:14-16

This was part of the NT reading in church today, and I want to meditate upon it this week. We also sang the following hymn in Russian. I wanted to see and sing all the verses in English when I got home.

The church's one Foundation
Is Jesus Christ her Lord;
She is his new creation
By water and the Word:
From heav'n he came and sought her
To be his holy bride;
With his own blood he bought her,
And for her life he died.

Elect from ev'ry nation,
Yet one o'er all the earth,
Her charter of salvation
One Lord, one faith, one birth;
One holy Name she blesses,
Partakes one holy food.
And to one hope she presses,
With ev'ry grace endued.

Though with a scornful wonder
Men see her sore oppressed,
By schisms rent asunder,
By heresies distressed,
Yet saints their watch are keeping,
Their cry goes up, "How long?"
And soon the night of weeping
Shall be the morn of song.

The church shall never perish!
Her dear Lord to defend,
To guide, sustain and cherish
Is with her to the end;
Though there be those that hate her,
And false sons in her pale,
Against or foe or traitor
She ever shall prevail.

'Mid toil and tribulation,
And tumult of her war,
She waits the consummation
Of peace for evermore;
Till with the vision glorious
Her longing eyes are blest,
And the great church victorious
Shall be the church at rest.

Yet she on earth hath union
With the God the Three in One,
And mystic sweet communion
With those whose rest is won:
O happy ones and holy!
Lord, give us grace that we,
Like them, the meek and lowly,
On high may dwell with thee.

I once heard a sermon by Art Azurdia titled "Our Sympathetic Resonance" in which he illustrated Jesus' sympathetic High Priestly role to the sympathetic Resonance of a piano. If you have two pianos in one room and strike Middle C on one of them, the other will resonate that same note. It was a great illustration of how Jesus sympathizes with our weaknesses.

The Churches One Foundation is also one of my favorite hymns!

That's one of the hymns we sang yesterday morning, but set to a new tune.

Your posting on it makes me want to emphasize - "elect from every nation yet one o'er all the earth....one Lord, one faith, one birth."
