We're Okay. The Van Isn't.
Today we were rear-ended while at a stoplight. The kids and I are a bit sore and will be soaking in epsom salts and visiting the chiro. But, thank God! We are okay.
The guy who hit us was really apologetic, and super gracious. He talked with the police officer, it was completely his fault, and his insurance will cover the damage.
The back door of the van is bent up, but the glass wasn't broken. The front is slightly banged up. My glasses flew off, and I couldn't find them for about 45 minutes. They weren't broken, either.
The adreneline rush had me shaking. I was still physically unsteady for about an hour. Mom B. wasn't too far away, and came and helped me as we waited for the officer to take care of the paperwork. Then she escorted me to Sam's to get a new battery. (Needed to be replaced--not sure if it was due to the accident or not.)
If we had to be in an accident, this was the type to be in. No serious injuries. Not our fault. And the other guy has a nicer car than we do and great insurance.
Update 05/12: Still working through in insurance issues. Still waiting for an app't with the chiropractor. Had a flat tire this morning, and bought two new ones. Transmission acting funny. A/C capricious. *big ol' sigh*

I am so glad that you all walked away with only sore muscles! How scary! It does get that adrenaline pumping for a long time doesn't it, I think you sort of get a "hangover" feeling afterward from it too sometimes when you are that scared.
Happy Mother's Day!!!!!

Glad to hear that you're all right. Those rear-enders can hurt for a while though, so take good care of yourself. Hope your van is good-as-new soon.

Just a note; the children may seem fine for a short period of time and then start acting scared; it can, not necessarily will happen. But if a few weeks down the line they suddenly get freaked when they enter the car, it is most likely related to the accident, and it is a normal reaction. Just thought you should know.
Glad you are all okay. Drink lots of water to flush those extra hormones out!

So glad to hear that everyone is okay!
Do make sure to get all the seat belts checked--sometimes they need to be replaced after a crash due to stretching. Also, check about the child safety seats. The latest advise on that is that if the crash was minor (no damage to the frame of the car) they may still be safe to use. However, you should contact the manufacturers of the specific seats and find out what their policy is--if being in even a minor crash voids the waruntee, you should get replacement seats paid for by insurance. If the insurance agent balks at this tell him that the carseat manufacturer has voided the waruntee, and ask him if he will provide a letter in writing from his company stating that the seat(s) are still safe to use. Generally this gets them to change their tune as they do not want to issue a letter like that!
Hugs!

So glad you and boys are okay!!! (((hugs)))
Posted by: Sally at May 10, 2005 11:01 PM
So thankful that this was just minor and that the other person involved was so straightforward! Somehow, even the smallest accident can cause enormous headaches when the person at fault is unpleasant. Thank God for his protection of you and yours! Ah, and Happy Mother's Day, too!

Jenn,
Thank you for the advice re: the car seats.
For those with a Dodge, here's what to do:
Call 1-800-992-1997
Option 2
Option 1
Option 5
Have vehicle VIN ready.Rachel Ann,
Oh, man. Thanks for mentioning that to me. I didn't even *think* that the stress may come up later. My youngest has been talking about the crash a lot. The boys, in general, have been a bit tense. (Gee, I wonder why?) They really freaked out right after the crash, but I appreciate that you reminded me that this might continue to show up later. . .
Everyone:
Thank you so much for the kind words, well wishes, prayers. . . It seems like when it rains, it pours. . . I spoke with the adjuster today (playing phone tag) and now she doesn't want me to drive our vehicle. Thankfully the Other Guy has good insurance, and they are paying for a rental. Woohoo! I'm slightly nervous that they'll consider it a total loss and want to give us one sum to purchase a new vehicle instead of repair this one. It was such a headache finding a good, reliable van that was reasonably priced.Breathe Deep. Drink Tea. Meditate on God's sovereignty.
