Advent 2005

Today is the first Sunday in Advent.

If your family does not yet observe Advent, I'd like to encourage you to consider incorporating it into your family Christmas traditions. There are many ways to observe advent, from the very simple to the more involved.

The denomination I grew up in was very prideful in not doing anything that The Denominations (Catholic, Lutheran, Baptist, anyone else that wasn't Us) did. So I grew up without the Advent tradition. I didn't realize this past Sunday was the first Sunday of Advent so we missed it :o(! Would it be too stupid to start on the second Sunday?

Gem, you could start this week, and then you'd be caught up by next Sunday.

Our household goods weren't shipped in time for me to unpack our wreath, so this year I went the quick and easy route - I bought a greenery wreath on a wire frame and arranged four tapers in small holders around it, then placed the pillar in the center. That cost me around $10. If you already have sufficient candle holders, you could place them on a tray and put fresh greenery from your yard around it, which is what I did the first year we had Advent but no money to spend on it.

Gem -

I didn't grow up with nightly Advent either. Every year I want to do it, but never get the wreath done. My husband and I started last night, using TG's Advent guide from last year. The candles and wreath will *hopefully* be done in time for the 2nd Sunday! It really is a wonderful way to focus your heart during the hustle and bustle.
