Scarry Through The Years

Check out the changes in the old and new Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever. A soldier replaced by a judge, no more "brave heroes" and "beautiful screaming ladies."

This was one of my sister's books when she was little. My favorite Richard Scarry title was "What Do People Do All Day?"

I loved Richard Scarry, & so did my kids. I am on the lookout now for older version 2nd hand copies for (future) grandchildren. Today I listened to Beatrix Potter on CD. I hope no-one ever DARES bowdlerize her work. It's bad enough that all the Enid Blyton Noddy stories have been "done unto", with all the goblins & golliwogs removed. Does every kids book have to be PC now? Are kids so stupid that everything must be spelt out for them?

I like the new one; it is more consistent with my family's daily life and worldview!

We use the Best Word Book Ever and Busy, Busy, Town in our homeschool for kindergarten, along with half a dozen other Richard Scarry Books. We we use them alongside Mercer Mayer/Little Critter storybooks, readers, and workbooks. (Our Bible, History, Literature and Science are rather somber in tone, so the inhabitants of Critterville and Busytown help to lighten the mood!)

"What Do People Do All Day?" is still my favourite Richard Scarry book!

Ouch, that smarts.

I have the four volume hardbacks of Richards Scarys. I grew up with them and now I am reading them to my daughter, and soon my son Ian (He's only 7 weeks).

Now I will treasure them more than ever.

Strange alignments in the blog universe....

I just took my 6yo daughter to Books-A-Million and what did she pick out to buy? Yep, Richard Scarry's "What Do People Do All Day?".
