Three Alligator Deaths / One Week

In our neck of the swamp, the water table is low, the temperature is rising, and the alligators are mating.

That has led to three alligator-related deaths in a week. Very unusual.

Considering our neighborhood has several small lakes, it is not uncommon to see alligator snouts barely above water. Hubby has tried to point several gators out to me the past week--I'm usually too slow to see them as we drive by.

Obviously, we're keeping the kiddos away from the shoreline and in after dark.

In related news, R7 jumped into the pool the other day and then freaked out when he saw a snake was swimming, too. J9 thought he saw a wild cat right at the edge of the woods behind our house. And neighborhood lore is that a two year old who lived two doors down from us died a half-dozen years ago from a poinonous snake bite.

And here we are, safe in suburbia.

OMG ;o) it sounds like the jungle lol
the only snakes we have here in NZ are the double-headed anacondas (long chewy and sugary) you get at the store lol
and i'm perfectly happy keeping it that way

Yikes. And you thought Ukraine was an adventure! :-) We saw a raccoon cross our driveway an hour ago, and there are moose tracks back our trail. Check out my sister's blog for her moose sightings on the weekend. :-) The animals in our "neck of the woods" are not really dangerous - even the bears. The only time we hear a sad story, it is about a pitbull.

No need to fear, as long as you exercise common sense (which you're doing) you'll be fine. When we lived in Myakka, we would periodically have a resident gator in our pond, and as long as you mind your business and let the gator mind it's business, there aren't any problems. As it is, I can see it already, the media is going to turn this into "The Summer of the Aligator" and scare everybody like they did when they created "The Summer of the Shark" a few years back.

Could be that over enthusiastic environmentalist unnecessarily put alligators on the endangered species list some 30 years ago and now there are just more alligators than EVER before?

Shudder! I'm terrified of gators already! Never mind that I live in MO and have never seen an alligator in my life!!
