Book Club

T8 and I have started a mommy-son book club. He chose the first book we're both going to read and then discuss: Little Pilgrim's Progress.

I highly recommend it. It is great as a read aloud. I've read it a couple of times to the boys (and then read it on tape so they can listen to it again.) While Helen Taylor takes liberties, I find she stays true to the heart of the John Bunyan classic.

D16 and i still read books together.. and tease each other, "Have you got to the part where.." at which point there's much covering of ears and singing, "I'm not l-i-s-t-e-n-i-n-g.."

Oh! I did that with Sam when he was in about third grade--maybe fourth grade. I wrote a curriculum to go along with it. I wonder if I could find it now. . .different house, different computer. . .if you want me to look for it, I will.

I had Bible verses, several questions that got to the meat of the analogy for each chapter and an assignment to illustrate an aspect of the story (Sam loves to draw. . .)

That is one activity from years back that Sam still talks about.

I am in the middle of reading aloud "Little Pilgrim's Progress" to our family after dinner. (This is the 3rd time. The kids always beg for it.) We have read many others. But this one is their favorite.

Have you tried "Dangerous Journey" ? Our family loves this version of Pilgrim's Progress for children. Simplified and shortened but true to the original and beautifully illustrated to boot!
