Healthy Hot Dogs?

The boys had hot dogs for lunch. Hubby was quick to inform me that they were healthy hotdogs--served with flax seed, spinach, avocado and ketchup. He said they were delicious.

I'll take his word on it.

We have our hot dogs wrapped in homemade whole wheat (fresh ground *grin*) dough. So I try not to think about what kind of nasty is inside the 69c/package hot dog and focus on their healthy wrapper...

Healthy hot dogs?
What we really need are healthy corn dogs!

Whole wheat buns I can get. It's the flax seed--on a hotdog--that has me boggled. Then again, I'll eat flax seed on lots of stuff, just haven't done the culinary experiments Hubby has.

Sciolist, you know what? I think Hubby would agree with you. The world needs more meats on sticks.

i don't care what you put ON them, i don't buy the healthy bit... BUT, if you are willing to shell out a few extra bucks - we do occasionally allow Hebrew dogs in the house. They are kosher all beef and even i like the taste if they are charred nicely over a fire...

Flax seed with hotdogs....ewwwww! :)

I know it's good for you, but it sounds, um... interesting.

Because I lived in a small Bavarian town growing up, we ate hotdogs and sausages all the time when I was a kid. Down here in TN, folks don't know what a real hotdog is. You should hear the comments if I serve something with a casing! When forced to choose from what's available at Wal-Mart, I choose Hebrew Nationals (like mtnmama) or Nathan's. What cracks me up is that Hebrew Nationals package seven hotdogs in each packet. :o)

Check your natural food store for organic (or naturally-raised) beef hot dogs (I like the Applegate Farms brand) ... that's probably the closest you can get to a healthy hot dog. I guess the chicken hot dogs would be better, but they don't taste as good! ;)

BTW, if you want food on a stick, the Minnesota State Fair at the end of August is the place to be!

We frequently use Hebrew National as well. We assume they must be ok since they're packaged in 7s. :)

Hotdogs are one of the few things that I remain brand loyal--I like Ballpark All-Beef franks. However, with such rousing endorsement, I guess I should try the Hebrew ones. (They were on sale Buy-One-Get-One last week. . . wish I'd tried them then!)
